CONDITION AND HISTORY
This 308 GT4 was a July '78 build and sold new in New York, where it remained during most of the following years. Now with its fourth owner, the car was returned to the road after a long hiatus in storage and has been completely refreshed over the last eighteen months. With only 614 Dinos sold in the US, and 267 built in 1978, this example represents a rare opportunity to enjoy a turn-key Series II car in desirable black on black.
Despite living in the Northeast, it is clear this car was kept out of the elements throughout its life, given the solid, straight, and original body throughout. Grease pencil markings of the body assembly number (603) can be found on the hood, trunk, doors, interior panels and the rear seat back. The black paint is an older but presentable job, with some sanding marks and evidence of touch-ups here and there. Glass and trim are all very well-preserved though, as are the immaculate "five star" Campagnolo wheels shod in fresh Pirelli Cinturato tires.
Inside, the original interior has been retained and looks excellent with a consistent, warm patina. The aircraft-style aluminum dash is particularly striking in these cars, and here it looks perfect alongside the correct Momo steering wheel and Ferrari's signature gated five-speed shift lever. Sculptural, ribbed leather bucket seats show minimal wear for their age, namely some minor cracking on the driver's bolster. Above, the original headliner and sunroof are intact and still tight, their light gray coloring bringing some welcome light into the dark leather cabin. Unlike many Ferraris of this period, the Dino features working A/C upgraded to R134, as well as a period Blaupunkt tape deck and power windows.
What really sets this Dino apart, though, is the hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars spent on its recent refurbishment. Nearly every system in the car has been gone through, with detailed notes and receipts for the entire process organized in a large binder. The V8 starts easily (thanks to Pertronix electronic ignition) and runs very strong, with a recent compression test indicating 155-160 PSI across the board. It also benefitted from a refreshed cooling system and belt service. A rebuilt suspension and brake system both work flawlessly, while numerous other fixes ensure a reliable, tight, and factory-fresh driving experience. This Dino is a true pleasure on the road, a reminder of how fastidious servicing and enthusiastic ownership can make a huge difference in a car's character.
