CONDITION AND HISTORY
Originally delivered to an R.C. Davis of Marysville, CA in November 1962, this 356 spent its first thirty years on the West Coast in both California and Oregon. Eventually it arrived at Autowerks NW in 1988 for some new paint while under the care of Monte Shelton Motor Co. Given the modest values of these cars at the time, the cost of the paint work forced a sale, and so it ended up on its way to New York courtesy of new owner Larry Fisher.
From 1989 on the car has remained here in New York, first with Larry, then with famed architect Ricardo Scofidio. Under Scofidio's ownership the Porsche has received fastidious and fully-documented service by the experts at Briarcliff Classic and Imported. In beautiful shape and extremely original, the car has benefitted from very light usage over the last few decades, and very likely its entire life. Recent paintwork is immaculate and done to a high standard; the correct shade of Ivory perfectly represented in a glossy, even coat. It becomes immediately apparent underneath the car that this was never a rusty or damaged example, the Reutter body appears undisturbed and straight throughout. Trim and glass are similarly tidy, as are the lovely wheels with their signature chrome hubcaps.
Inside, the 356 presents a beautifully-preserved cabin, featuring a wonderful, consistent patina. The front seats have that inimitable feeling of years of use but without any untoward wear, while the headliner, mats, and door cards are all equally evocative. Ahead, a stunning Nardi wheel, perfect VDO gauges, clock, and the period Blaupunkt radio complete the picture, while the small fold-down rear seats are still in like-new condition. Up front, the trunk holds a correct spare and tool roll.
There's no denying the fun and charm of a 1600S engine, and this Porsche's motor is a great example of the breed. Quick to start, perfectly tuned, and with plenty of power, it speaks volumes about the care and attention lavished on this car over the years. Complemented by a flawless four-speed, strong brakes, and a sorted suspension, this 356 is the definition of turn-key. Over fifteen years of records reflect numerous services, little fixes, and improvements. It has all culminated in one of the finest, most original examples out there.
