1976 Alfa Romeo 2000 Spider Veloce

Following Alfa’s evocative ‘60s Duetto, the Series 2 Spider debuted with a modern, squared-off body and numerous trim changes. Originally offered with the same 1750 engine from its predecessor, the new car eventually received a brawny two-liter motor in 1971, officially becoming the 2000 Spider Veloce. This willing and powerful new engine, along with increased luggage capacity and Alfa’s signature agility and driving pleasure, assured that the Spider would stay relevant and desirable for years to come.

An extremely original example, this 1976 2000 Spider Veloce is now available after years in a private collection. With only 36,000 miles on the clock, and decades of maintenance and care at Dominick’s European Car Repair in White Plains, NY, it is truly one of the best-preserved S2 Spiders anywhere.

Every inch of this Alfa reflects careful and enthusiastic stewardship, especially the exceedingly dry and straight body. When up on a lift the car is a masterclass in what an original, solid Spider should look like, while above, the bodylines remain crisp and unblemished, wearing a wonderful, lurid coat of “Giallo Pagoda” paint. Resprayed once to a high standard, it presents with minimal wear, the only exception being some small chips behind the front right wheel and a few minor dents by the nose. Trim and glass are equally presentable, and even the federal bumpers have aged well.

Inside, the striking cabin features Wild Boar vinyl seats and doorcards, complemented by a tidy dash and working, period-correct Becker Europa radio. All electronics are functional and the stunning Jaeger gauges look pristine. Above, the original top is still intact, with only a minor scuff near the base of its clear and unblemished rear window. When down, the tonneau cover fits well and appears fresh and rarely used.

The best part of this Spider, though, is how it feels on the road. The muscular twincam engine pulls hard and sounds excellent, while Alfa’s slick five-speed gearbox complements it perfectly. The SPICA fuel injection is also worth mentioning, tuned to a high standard and allowing for easy cold-starting and smooth acceleration. Brakes are solid and effective, while the car’s suspension manages that timeless Alfa trick of being both precise and compliant.
