MODEL OVERVIEW

Bolstered by the Marshall Plan, Alfa entered the ‘50s with a new model: the 1900. As the company’s first production line automobile, this car heralded a fresh post-War direction, that of unibody construction and business on a much larger scale. While the 1900 became renown for its coachbuilt variants, Alfa’s own sedan design proved to be the volume seller. With an advanced 1.9L twincam up front and an equally sporty chassis, the 1900 was a competitive machine, most notably at the Targa Florio. This quickly earned it the title of “the family car that wins races,” a worthy tagline indeed.

CONDITION AND HISTORY

After thoroughly enjoying Martin Swig’s ’57 1900SS Coupe during the California Mille, Automobile Magazine’s legendary columnist David E. Davis decided he needed an Alfa in his life. With the help of Swig and retired Italian Formula 1 driver Gino Munaron, he sourced this mint 1900 Super Berlina from an Italian enthusiast near Milan. Shipped to the US in the early 2000s, the car ran the California Mille in 2006, and later was sold to its current owner here in NY.

Unique, luxurious, and sublime on the road, the Super is an exceptional example, well-preserved and very original throughout. The curvaceous body remains straight and dry, with excellent shutlines and sporting a fascinating shade of gray paint that changes in every light. With recent chrome and restored Borrani wheels, the car presents as a very nice driver, with the only notable flaws being small areas of corrosion behind the front wheels and a tiny paint crack by the passenger side taillight.

Inside, the fabulous two-tone interior is an absolute time capsule, featuring comfortable, mint condition bench seats and a stunning dash. The details inside this car, from the braided handles on the back of the front seats to the elegant sun visors, are exquisite and evoke the heady era of a post-War company getting back into its stride. All electrics work well, and the large lacquer steering wheel with its accompanying “four on the tree” column shifter are striking to look at and even better to hold.

Mechanically perfect, the car has benefitted from a recent brake service and several years of expert care, the result being an incredibly smooth, refined driving experience accented by an upgraded exhaust. As a fast touring automobile there are few that can come close, and with the wide variety of events that this car is eligible for it is almost certain that it will be put to good use in the years to come.
